1. UCLA’s Offensive Line Could Decide the Fate of Season
This is obviously always a factor in determining the fate of a team’s season, but with UCLA being one of the nation’s top ten teams and a legitimate contender for the Pac 12 it brings up more of a concern. Preseason Heisman contender Quarterback Brett Hundley could only do so much, along with the rest of the offense, in producing drives that put points on the scoreboard. At the half, UCLA only managed one drive longer than five plays with zero points from the offense (three defensive touchdowns). The line was without center Jake Brendel (knee) and highly touted Scott Quessenberry took over. The unit that needed to improve the most from 2013 was the offensive line and even without all-conference guard Xavier Su’a-Filo the unit was still on pace to see a vast improvement. The offensive line woes continue and need to make tremendous strides before facing a heavy talented Texas front in two weeks. 2. The SEC West is a Wide Open Race I always hate to jump to conclusions, especially after week one, but the SEC West could be a fun league to watch with almost every team with a chance to make a run at the number one spot. The media favorite, Alabama, was far from looking like the number two squad versus West Virginia Saturday with many questions coming from the defensive side of the ball with struggles against the hurry-up no huddle spread offense in which the Tide will face at least three or four more times this season. Auburn was dominant on offense, but still the defensive concerns came about in their 45-21 win over Arkansas. LSU struggled mightily in the first three quarters versus Wisconsin in Jerry’s World with most of the concerns coming at quarterback with Anthony Jennings never getting in a rhythm going 9-21 in the game, though managing 239 yards and two touchdowns. Texas A&M blew the college football nation away last Thursday night dominating the Gamecocks from beginning to end. Kenny Hill has shown that this offense won’t miss a beat without Johnny Manziel and is accompanied by a much improved defense which is scary for a team that was supposed to finish at best fourth in the West. Ole Miss and Mississippi State took some time (especially Ole Miss), but then found comfort in their offenses and cruised with heavy talented defenses. I guess I went a little far explaining why this division will be so tight, but you can see how much each and every game will mean to these possibly four playoff contending teams. Don’t be surprised if one of these teams does not make the postseason playoff due to the battles they will encounter each week. 3. USC Found a Quarterback With just all the recent distracting and corruptive news out of Los Angeles in recent weeks it was comforting to just see the Trojans play a football game. Cody Kessler made Trojan fans and a majority of the nation forget about the recent news and came to realize what we should really expect from the 2014 Trojans. Kessler was phenomenal in the opener versus Fresno State with 354 yards and four touchdowns giving him 699 total passing yards and eight touchdowns in his past two games. I realize Kessler was the full-time starter in 2013, but the consistency seems to be becoming more of trend for Kessler and that would put USC in serious threat for the top spot in the always competitive Pac 12. 4. D’haquille Williams is a Playmaker The Auburn JUCO transfer made his highly talked about debut Saturday on the Plains versus Arkansas. “Duke” was nothing short of expectation compiling nice catches and 154 yards with one score. Williams is already implementing himself in the offense tag-teaming with the already dangerous Sammie Coates and other options for the heavy talented group at Auburn. A passing game in Auburn will make this team so much tougher to defend…as if they weren’t already. 5. Baylor is a dominant team. Offense: 574 total offense; six touchdowns; 31 first downs Defense: 67 total defense; zero touchdowns; 7 first downs The Baylor offense was already the best in the country, but now factor in a domination defense? This team is a serious national title threat. As I said in my preseason write up on my #6 Baylor Bears “Now just factor in a defense and you have a national title caliber team.” Even with Oklahoma’s rout of Louisiana Tech, Baylor should be the Big 12 favorite if not already. Bryce Petty’s injury will weigh in tremendously on the fate of the 2014 season. What We Already Knew: -Todd Gurley (RB-UGA) is a BEAST. (15 att. 198 yards 3 touchdowns; 1 KO Return TD) -Robert Nkemdiche is a flat out monster up front for Rebs. -Kevin Sumlin is a quarterback czar. -Michigan State is the favorite to win the Big Ten. |
