The really only headliners of uncertainty that Auburn has had to face in preseason camps as of late are the quarterback positions; this season is a little different. Many questions have surrounded this team this offseason focusing on finding replacements for the highly regarded departures at running back (Tre Mason), left tackle (Greg Robinson), H-back (Jay Prosch), defensive end (Dee Ford), cornerback (Chris Davis), punter (Steven Clark), and kicker (Cody Parkey). With those positions already being in the process of being filled, the Tigers have had some bad news before and during camp about the possibility of replacing more positions.
The quarterback fill-in, Jeremy Johnson, should have no problem taking over the starting spot from the suspended Nick Marshall in the opener versus Arkansas after playing in five games with a start in the 2013 season. After gaining experience early in the 2013 season and then continuing to play in every game last season, senior Cameron Artis-Payne should be just fine starting at running back. Replacing the punisher, Jay Prosch, will be no easy task, but Brandon Fulse has been raved about in the past and could be just as good as a blocker as Prosch without the punishing blows. Other graduates having to be replaced: -Left Tackle: Greg Robinson à Shon Coleman -Defensive End: Dee Ford à Elijah Daniel -Cornerback: Chris Davis à Jonathan Jones or TJ Davis -Kicker: Cody Parkey à Daniel Carlson -Punter: Steven Clark à ? Some of the uglier news came at the end of the summer when we learned from Coach Gus Malzahn at SEC Media Days that Carl Lawson had ACL surgery and will most likely miss the whole 2014 season. The news was rough. It got worse as a couple of weeks later the other Freshman All-American Alex Kozan is going to be sidelined for the season with a major back injury, which could even jeopardize his future football career. To continue the trend of bad news, Robenson Therezie has reportedly been suspended for multiple failed drug tests and could miss up to six games leaving inexperience at the star position where Therezie excelled last season. Therezie’s status is still uncertain, but either way this is a tough story to swallow for defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson in his second year implementing his unique 4-2-5 scheme. Jonathon Mincy will not start the opener and could also miss significant time this season after being arrested for marijuana earlier this summer. The injuries are severe and the suspensions could be as well. This Auburn team was fortunate enough last season to not see many injuries and/or suspensions, but as college sports go we know this is unfortunately part of it. Thoughts From Fall Camp: I don’t have any inside access or sideline passes to any practices or scrimmage, but here are some notes I have taken from articles written by highly regarded Auburn reporters. Just thought I would compile them all in to one instead of you having to open numerous tabs to get the insight for just one story. _Returning from an ACL tear last season, Joshua Holsey is now penciled in at cornerback tweaked his knee and has been a little limited in practice. Should be fine for opener. _Potential defensive line starters DaVonte Lambert (back spasms) and Devaroe Lawrence (knee) have been limited in practice. “The frustrating thing is we can’t get Devaroe and DaVonte out there for three or four days in a row.” –Ellis Johnson (al.com) _Freshman defensive end Raashed Kennion is making strides during camp and could push for a major role this spring in a heavy talented defensive line unit. _Wide receiver Jaylon Denson (knee in 2013) finally getting back to 100%. _Daniel Carlson is the favorite to take on kicking, punting, extra points, and kickoff duties this spring. Carlson will for sure be the starting place kicker this season. _LaDarius Owens has sat of practice with an infection in his already surgically repaired leg. No timetable for return. _Offensive guard Jordan Diamond is still trying to push for playing time after being slowed due to two surgeries during his time in school. Diamond is a RS-Sophomore. _Offensive guard Devonte Danzey filled in nicely for, then, banged up Chad Slade at right guard. Danzey could push for playing/starting time at left guard for the injured Alex Kozan. _Derrick Moncrief has sat out with illness; Jonathan “Rudy” Ford has taken advantage taking snaps with first team at strong safety and may be the starter for the opener. |
